Ohm River Valley

OHM RIVER VALLEY

Close to the village Dierbach, next to the creek water mouth, there is the small village Grenzenbusch. While hiking the creek upwards, we reach a wide valley, where castle Grenz will lie ahead of one. Long time ago - about 800 years - knight Guntram was that castle’s lord.

As a perfect robber-knight, his whole appearance was frightening the people. His body was strong and trappy, his hair scrubby and red. Knowing well using sword and lance, he was looking out for a dispute, hunting and drinking bout were his preferred occupations.

Only their fear was hindering his friends to become his enemy.

With 30 years Guntram decided he wanted to bring a consort up to his castle, cause he was in need of a son as a heir.

The beautiful young lady Agnes von Hartenfels, was the elected one for Guntram. He never tried to receive her affection through suavities, but by endangering her father, he forced him to accept the marriage.

Agnes was then living a bitter life. After the marriage, knight Guntram wasn’t caring anymore about his wife. But finally by awaiting a child in her womb, she could gain again some hope. Maybe Guntram would be happy about his heir and then become more friendly…? But then a beautiful girl was born instead of a needed son. Knight Guntram was so disappointed that he didn’t cared about wife and daughter, he knew hardly that his daughter’s name is Mathilda. Agnes became more and more sad. Only now her father, Bruno von Hartenfels realized, in which sorrow he had forced his daughter Agnes. As a support he was sending out his privat chaplain, Peter Anselmus, to castle Grenz. He was accepted by Guntram and did his best to give advices and comfort to the young mother. Peter took care about Mathilda, by teaching her writings, reading and harp. Nevertheless, Guntram didn’t had any influences on his daughters education.

Agnes and Mathilda were used to walk around the area of castle Grenz, having a look to the poor in the villages. One day, the coal burner Anton, was imprisoned in Grenz. Cause he was hunting a rabbit in his garden, which was appealingly belonging to Guntram, he was find guilty. Jonas Gierig, who had seen the act, ran to Guntram and announced the outrage, awaiting a fine reward. Knight Guntram was upset about Anton and punished him hard and cruel. He told to blind him, so that he will loose his eyesight and can be thrown in the cave. Even the pleas of mother and daughter didn’t changed his mind, he went on with the punishment. After loosing his eyesight, Anton was send home, where his daughter, Maria was fostering him. Agnes und Mathilda, who had pain to accept Guntram's cruelty, helped the family by sending ointments and nutrition to their house.

Already the mistress of castle Grenz experienced plenty of sufferings, but as Mathilda ,her beloved daughter, lost her eyesight, the pain was increasing. Mathilda couldn’t recognize anymore flowers, trees and even the people around her disappeared in her eyes. Agnes couldn’t bear anymore that painful situation, so one day while ringing the bell she announced her leaving. Now, only padre Peter, took care of Mathilda und she became more lonely.

When the german king, Adolf of Nassau called to the war, Guntram left to follow him. Hunter Ulrich had to accompany him as a weapon menial. Just close to Worms a flight was happening and Guntram dropped. Ulrich, who could escape luckily, went quickly to castle Grenz and proclaimed the loss of Guntram. Mathilda had also lost her father.

But her destiny didn’t become more bright. Many friends of Guntram became now his enemies and took the act to conquer the castle and share the goods. Mathilda should be kept in a cave and Padre Peter should be murdered.

But the light full padre Peter, was already caring about a save accommodation for small Mathilda. In the nunnery by Herchen his sister was abbess. Here Mathilde should be able to live a peaceful and and quiet life.

Hunter Ulrich was given the task to supervise the castle, while the group around Mathilda left to head for Herchen. Without disturbances they reached the height by Obersaal. Between the oaks and in protection of their shade, the wayfarers took rest and restore with some food brought along for the last step of the journey.

Everyone was lust for refreshing water. Two companion were sending out in search of a nice well. Very soon they returned reporting about a source at a nearby mountain side. Cheerfully the travelers hurried to that said place, looking forward to refresh and drink from this delicious element. Mathilda was leaded as well to that source, cooled down her countenance and nursed her thirst. Sadly she spoke: „Oh Lord, would it be also in my favour to have a look at this beautiful area.“ While continuing refreshing her face with that beautiful clear water and speaking out that wish, her eyes started to become clear and clearer. Every items seemed to her as being in the twilight. Was that illusion or did she really gained back her eyesight? The happy girl went on cooling her face with the water  and suddenly the items got more and more obvious. She recognized the people, trees, mountains, the water and the sun. Cheerfully she exclaimed: „Oh thank you great lord, i may see again.“ Overwhelmed, Mathilda and her companions fell on their knees, bowing down to God for his great relief. Full of hope and courage, they headed on to the nunnery in Herchen. As the abbess heard about the miracle, she was deeply moved and told to edge the well and settle a cross out of truthful gratitude.

Living now in nunnery Herchen, Mathilda often went to visit this miraculous place and thanked God for his blessing and help.
